From the Toronto Globe & Mail, Nov.14.2001:

New Haven, Conn. -- Francis John Anscombe, who founded the statistics
department at Yale University and taught at Princeton and Cambridge,
has died. He was 83.

Mr. Anscombe, who was British-born, pioneered computers for the
statistical analysis of data and advocated care in interpreting data.

Mr. Anscombe published 50 research articles and one book, "Computing
in Statistical Science through APL", published in 1981.

During the Second World War, he helped develop systems to launch
anti-aircraft rockets and developed a mathematical solution to prevent
rockets from falling on English forces during D-Day.
