They are currently being utilized by the Navy in the Norfolk Navy Base, VA as a
test case. They use a JAVA script on a magnetic strip, and a computer chip
built right into the plastic card to accomplish its mission. Its supposed to
be the latest thing in plastic card technology. The device used to read the
card uses Windows NT computers, servers as well card reading technologies to
accomplish its tasks. What exactly those tasks are I couldn't tell you because
I haven't found a use for the thing yet. Supposedly though they will allow
people to go on and off base, use of the NEX, use of facilities such as gym,
gas cards, etc... It is supposedly multipurpose. And it probably doesn't have
any competition ... YET.
