 PreCreateWindow - Why is it called twice for CMDIFrameWnd

VC++ 4.2

Why is PreCreateWindow called twice? The second time through it seems to
pass a CDocument through instead of the Doc type specified in the template
- but this turns out to be an invalid pointer. What elements are valid
during each pass? Is there a safe test to perform to tell the difference
between each pass?
