Problem Loading VC++ 1.0 from CD Supplied with Learn Visual C++ Now Book from MS Press

I'm having a problem installing VC++ 1.0 from the CD that came with the
book Learn Visual C++ Now. The Learn Visual C++ Now files don't install
at all. When installing VC++ 1.0 the files (most of them) in the
directory e:\msvc\msvc\source\startup are not installed either. The e:\
drive is my CD. I'm running Window 3.1. In both cases I get an error
saying cannot access source file <filename>. When looking at the CD
using File Manager the files appear to be there but I can't access them
using File Manager either. I seem to recall seeing a posting somewhere
where someone else had the same problem. I didn't pay much attention at
the time since I didn't have the book then. I looked for a service pack
but did not see anything that I thought fit. I know the S/W agreement w/
the book said that this product is not supported but the cover also says
the book contains a "working" version of VC++. Has anyone else had this
problem or can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

PS E-mail is acceptable also.

As dumb as this may sound ... if you're running any kind of disk cache
(like smartdrv),  try disabling it before running the install.   Good
luck ...
