This may come across as a bit harsh, and isn't really aimed solely at you,
but...
You could do this with an owner-draw menu. What is this, a day or two of
work? It would be fun and you could probably improve some detail or two
compared to how Microsoft did it. Then you could ask the Justice Dept. if
they'll let you post some sample code on their web site, for anyone unwilling
or unable to write this kind of thing themselves.
Microsoft can't take away what's between your two ears. In fact, if you're
concerned about Microsoft's {*filter*}, you should be concerned about the
attitude that developers can't do something until Microsoft hands it to them
on a platter in the form of some SchmactiveX control or IDE checkbox. I
realize the build/buy/borrow decision isn't always simple, but we're talking
about menus and toolbars here, not hacking the kernel. If this is a critical
competitive issue, you've already lost.
