 New Office look

Greetings,

I think we would all like to know why MS decided not to support the new
user interface style in VC++ 5.0.

It almost seems like Microsoft is holding on to a competative edge by not
releasing any support or  examples to create such applications. Does anyone
agree ... anyone?, US Justice Dept?, Buler?, Buler?

        Just a thought!

This may come across as a bit harsh, and isn't really aimed solely at you,
but...

You could do this with an owner-draw menu. What is this, a day or two of
work? It would be fun and you could probably improve some detail or two
compared to how Microsoft did it. Then you could ask the Justice Dept. if
they'll let you post some sample code on their web site, for anyone unwilling
or unable to write this kind of thing themselves.

Microsoft can't take away what's between your two ears. In fact, if you're
concerned about Microsoft's {*filter*}, you should be concerned about the
attitude that developers can't do something until Microsoft hands it to them
on a platter in the form of some SchmactiveX control or IDE checkbox. I
realize the build/buy/borrow decision isn't always simple, but we're talking
about menus and toolbars here, not hacking the kernel.  If this is a critical
competitive issue, you've already lost.

As far as I understand, MFC was designed to support Windows features that
are supported in all versions of Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0. The "new"
user interface features aren't, so MFC doesn't support them.

The Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer teams don't use MFC to support
their new styles -- the Office team even developed their very own DLLs to
display their docking menus.

Nobody is preventing you from doing the same thing.

Whether its a good idea to change the whole look and feel of the user
interface is another question entirely, but I won't get into that.

While this may not be the correct place I would like to tag along on this
discuss to ask if anyone knows the versions of the products which were
included in Office97?  Are the products backward compatible?  Specifically
I am concerned witih ACCESS and EXCEL.
