After installing Service Pack 2 (Full), I get following meesage every time I
start VC++. I am not able to use this application

Same experience like you.
As for me, I replaced every files starting mfc42*.* from normal systems, and
it works well.
It's really funny same file doesn't work same way.

Did the MFC42.dll not get broken in the Visual C++ 6 release?

Broken being that it was not backwards compatible with the version shipped
with Visual C++ 5.

Also see http://www.microsoft.com/data/21info.htm see they change to much
then it snaps.

Typical, no future planning.

NT 2000 or what ever they call it will also be the same for many years to
come.

The 64 bit Windows will also be like this, buggy for years.
