I have 2 question for you:

1)  Why do you want to have a simpler function that does the same thing?

This one appears to work just fine. Do you want to optimize it for
speed? Do you want to learn how to write more professional and more
maintainable code? I would hope it to be the latter.

2)  How strictly must the simpler function match the output of the
Either way the function can be significantly improved.
