Does Word 97 change the RTF file format in help files

Does Word 97 change the RTF file format in help files

Here's a question that may be ahead of its time.
Windows 3.1x Help Files
I need to maintain some older help files for Visual Basic 3.0
applications. Using Word 8.0 in Office 97, I run into Error 4639. "Error in
filename at byte offset 0x%1X" when re-compiling an RTF file to run under
VB3 and Windows 3.1x. I am using Windows 95 and Word 97.
Tracking it down, the VB 3 documentation tells me I shouldn't get that
message if I am using MS Word for Windows. But both that documentation and
the compiler message were written in the days of Windows 3.1 and Word 2.0c.
The world has marched on.
Does anybody know if Word 97's ability to save .RTF files has altered
the RTF format and is causing this error? I did not pick this up when I
beta-tested Office 97. Either reply to this posting, or (preferably) e-mail

Which version of the help compiler are your using?  Older version do not
work
with Word6.* and higher -- you may need the updated version HCP.EXE

You can download this from www.microsoft.com/VBasicSupport

Hope this helps,

Doug.

Does Word 97 change the RTF file format in help files

Hi Doug:
My tools were completely up to date as of Word 95. I downloaded and
installed the new help compiler, and used the neat things in WHAT6 as well.
Everything worked fine under Word 95 and Word 6.0, which shared the same
file format. Microsoft has changed the file format under Office 97, and it
seems to affect the ability of Word to save RTF files in a format that the
latest version of the tools can read.
Try and replicate this if you can. However, I think it's time to bump it
up to Microsoft. Thanks for the suggestion.
Bob

I don't have Office 97, only 95 -- it may be that 97 has changed the rules.

I will ask around -- if I find out anything I will post it here.
