Wow, not only has www.eternal-september.org apparently said it will not honor the rogue rmgroup requests for the microsoft.public.* hierarchy, it appears they have now added (nearly?) all the groups that they didn't already have to those they carry! If you have an E-S account, and are using a newsreader that doesn't automatically notify you of new groups, it's time to renew your lists. -- .NET: It's About Trust! http://www.*-*-*.com/ Customer Hatred Knows No Bounds at MSFT ClassicVB Users Regroup! comp.lang.basic.visual.misc Free usenet access at http://www.*-*-*.com/

If Google honors "rmgroup" command, then unfortunately new microsoft.public.* posts will not be archived or searchable in Google.

I have switched. I'm going to leave the MSNews server account configured so I can watch the groups I'm subscribed to fade away. 4 disappeared this morning. Bastards. And I mean both Microsoft AND the idiot unwashed masses who think Web forums/Facebook/Twitter are better than NNTP.

The big beef I have with web 'forums' is usually there is no threading messages.....it just looks like one long page of post after post with no hierarchy shown.

Yeah, I was over there surveying the territory the last couple days. It's a freakin' mess!!! You can't track responses to your posts, new messages in threads, who responds to who, nothing! And I can read a dozen or more messages in this group in the time it takes me to switch from one to another in that gawdawful mess. FWIW there are a couple of Bridge alternatives which allow the familiar newsreader UI for the new web forums. The MS version, or rather versions as you need one for Answers and another for MSDN & TechNet, is here http://connect.microsoft.com/MicrosoftForums But forget about that, Jochan Kalmback announced his version just a week ago and hit the ground running. Just the single app with loads of features, typically a new one every day. http://communitybridge.codeplex.com/ (see the Documentation page) Regards, Peter T

I'm coming in to this late...what is the advantage of using es vs ms? Is ms dropping the classic vb groups? Nobody tells me anything.

Search for older threads with "Microsoft responds" in the subject line.

Yeah, was aware of those, but the first is doomed and the latter is shooting at a moving target. Neither is a long-term viable solution. -- .NET: It's About Trust! http://vfred.mvps.org Customer Hatred Knows No Bounds at MSFT ClassicVB Users Regroup! comp.lang.basic.visual.misc Free usenet access at http://www.eternal-september.org

Not only. They'll drop their NNTP services entirely, little by little. Quote: >Nobody tells me anything.
Don't feel bad, I will. ;-) See, they just don't like non-centric systems anymore (that's not exactly breaking news, is it?), like NNTP or self-sufficient PC systems. So they tell us they have something new instead which is far better. Well ... go and check yourself what they have to offer. The good news is: if you don't like it, you can just stick with what you have. You just have to eventually change some of your newsreader settings and connect to an alternate server as is described at http://www.eternal-september.org/ for instance. MSFT cannot control the NNTP system entirely, so that's something we should preserve and keep alive, IMO. :-)

Boy, I've been over there, looked, and am still shaking! <chuckle> It's just *nutz* I tell ya. Examples: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vbgeneral/thread/8905df... http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vbgeneral/thread/ba2234... http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vbgeneral/thread/46557a... I gotta say, it sort of refreshing to watch them react in horror when someone answers a ClassicVB question. <eg> -- .NET: It's About Trust! http://vfred.mvps.org Customer Hatred Knows No Bounds at MSFT ClassicVB Users Regroup! comp.lang.basic.visual.misc Free usenet access at http://www.eternal-september.org
