You might do better with the protected mode version of the compiler -
HCP.EXE.  This requires extended memory, but is specifically designed to
run in a DOS box under windows.

Look for a file called HC505.EXE in the MS software library.

I have been using Windows Help Authoring Tool (WHAT6) with Windows 3.11
successfully on my stand alone laptop.

I upgraded to Windows 95 on the same machine and reinstalled What6.  The
compiler keeps {*filter*} when I try to run it. The error message for the
problematic file "hc31.exe" is "This program has performed an illegal
operation and will be terminated...".  

Does anyone know what the problem is:-)?  There does not seem to be much
help for What6 anyplace, maybe some kind soul can point me in the right
direction, it would be greatly appreciated!!

I don't know about WHAT6 - but hc31.exe is outdated - it is a help compiler
for win3.11
hcw.exe is the one MS ships for win95
