HELP!!: Can Connect via VB/Can't via ASP

I have a simple ASP that attempts to connect to a sqlserver database. The
call times out with the 80004005 General Network Error. A VB app using the
same connection string is able to connect without a problem.
I am running NT Server v4.0 sp6
                    IIS v4
                    ado v2.5
                    sqlserver v7
The article on the MS site
( http://www.*-*-*.com/ ) indicates
the cause may be the renaming of the SQL Server computer. Wouldn't I run
into the same problem in VB as well?
I have tried to explcitly cerate the adodb.connection.2.5, but to no avail.
Is there a difference in the way that IIS is translating the sqlserver alias
to IP Address? Since both applications are using ADO shouldn't the
translation be the same?

I have reinstalled the NT4 sp6 and SQL 7. Even trying to connect via ODBC
results in the same error message.
Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Here is the simplest example of IIS Code that cannot connect:
dim rs

dim ObjdbConn
set ObjdbConn = server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection.2.5")

objDbConn.Open "Driver={SQL

<OBJECT RUNAT=server PROGID=ADODB.Connection.2.5 id=conn> </OBJECT>

conn.ConnectionString= "Driver={SQL
