Crystal reports produces different result in VB than in CR developer

Hi there all -
Hopefully someone can steer me in the right direction -

I am using Crystal Reports developer to basically update some reports
which were created to use an older version of our database (maybe they
were made with an older version of crystal too).

I have been calling them in to the developer tool and updating the
reports, and all of them seem to run fine from within the developer
enviroment.

The trouble is this - when I run these same reports from the
already-existing Visual Basic application (I am not a VB programmer!),
many of the reports dont work. (I just get the error message "ERROR-
Cannot open SQL server"). Has  nyone seen this before?

I have noticed that the reports which dont work all contain subreports

Thanks, and apologies since I am a newbie...
