string truncation with crystal reports 8.5 and sql server 7

ola amigos,

when displaying a report using the Crystal Reports viewer and a report
crafted with crystal reports 8.5, long string fields (VARCHAR(1024))
are truncated to 254 characters.  we are connecting to a sql server 7
database via ADO (Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server).

things work fine with all of these components running on a single
machine (my development environment), but not so fine in the
production environment, where client and server are two different
machines.  it should be noted that i don't have administrative
priviledges on the production database, so it is difficult to browse
its settings.

any ideas?

many thanks,
dan
