PLEASE, PLEASE HELP, am I going MAD - Generating Totals
Please help, I think I'm going to go MAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope the following makes sense :( I am trying to generate my own totals for a report, as for some reason CR will not allow me to auto create totals for some of my formula fields (why the hell is this?). I have created a formula that goes with the report lines and creates a running total. When displayed on the lines, the running total is correct. However, as CR will not create a subtotal for me I am doing it myself. I have added a field in the summary level that takes the value from the running line total field. This in theory would appear to work, however, about 50% of the time, CR changes the value and seems to add to it!!!!! So I am left with the value shown on the last report line which is correct, however the field in the summary level does not show the same figure. Please please help Ian :(

I am not sure about your specific problem but our shop has recently adopted CR for a report engine on a substantial project. We resorted to signing up for the priority tech support. It costs us $199 per year. We have just registered for it and have not used it yet. I find CR difficult and the documentation for developers is horrendous, in my opinion. tjb

There are a couple of solutions. First, you can subtotal or total anything, providing it's a number. I suspect you're new to data in general, and you'll get this stuff soon. If it isn't a number type, create a formula and convert it to one, then the subtotal/grand total/summary stuff works fine. If you really need to get in and do some tricky stuff with data, read about the whileprintingrecords. Crystal has plenty of power in it, getting at it is difficult because of poor documentation and testing practices by Seagate (Crystal). -k

Which version Ian? If you're using version 4.x, you'll need to store variables and unless you deploy a workaround, you'll need to sort by the field you're running a subtotal on. Version 6 utilizes the RT function and can store totals with much less coding. Bill

Try version 7, it has a Running Total field, greatly simplifies the process. And there's no need to sort or group by the field you're running a subtotal on in any version, using any method I know of.
