VB5 (UDP prob) converting IP to hostname and vice versa

i am using a WinSock control to code a simple UDP client, i can set the
WinSock's RemoteHost to an IP address and it works fine however if i set
RemoteHost to a hostname, and i try to send data using the SendData method
the app hangs and then finally gives an error.
also using UDP is it possible to detect errors if for instance the IP
address is not found, or if a timeout occurs.
i have used the Winsock error event but it never seems to occur regardless
of whether the IP and port are valid.

Thanks for your help
