UserControls and memory usage. Resource hog?

So the new guy at work is under the impression that custom controls are
notorious memory hogs (and consistently makes this assertion in meetings).
I've created a control which basically sub-classes a combobox adding a
couple hundred lines of code to populate the list from the database. At max
there are 5 to 6 instances of the control loaded at any time.

The question being, Are custom UserControls inherently resource hogs or not?
That is, any more than any other 3rd party control or databound control?
