Using Forms Authentication to avoid the Windows Logon Box

Does anyone know how I can authenticate users *without* using the Windows
Logon box such that they can access files secured through NTFS permissions?

All users will have an ADS acct, but will *not* be connecting to the domain
(they will connect over the Internet).

Any ideas would direction to ideas would be appreciated.
