getting run-time behavior of a contained control in a user control at design time

Would it be possible to have, say, a textbox in a user control exhibit
run-time behavior, like allowing direct entry of text, at design time?

I know I can alter the text using the properties window.

Run-time behavior: you click inside the textbox, you get a blinking cursor.
You press the 'a' key, the character 'a' is added to the text in the
textbox.
