TOTALLY NEW TO PROGRAMMING!!!! Need Advice Please :-)

Hello everyone,

I need some advice, im a student and i'm real interested
in getting into programming, and i see as VB the easiest
way for me to get into the field, I have some prior
experience with, dare i say, Pascal :-P but i want to get
a little more advanced right now :-P

Now i've managed to get my hands on a copies of VS 6.0 and
VS .NET through my university.  Now i see that there is
quite a bit of a difference between the two when it comes
to coding, because of the .NET Framework in VB.NET.  Now
what i want to know is where should i start? Should i
start with some VB6 programming and slowing work into
VB.NET, or should i just jump into VB.NET?  Remember im
totally new to this language which means im going to have
to get used to a new syntax and all that stuff...

And what are some good books i could get on this, im not
too fond of the "Dummies or Idiot Guide" books, and are
there any other sites you can recommend me going to ?

Thank you everyone for the time you took for reading this.

Over and Out,
MajikMerlin

Learn VB.NET directly, you don't need to lear VB 6 before.
A lot of thing have change from VB6 to VB.NET, if you start with VB6 and
switch to VB.NET, you might get confuse.

Hi, I would say start to learn VB.NET, VB6 is an "old" language, now that
everything is changing. ActiveX and COM components are dead, and VB.NET
takes advantage of the new CLR (common-language runtime) and of course the
.NET framework. Not to mention the more powerful coding.

Haha, that makes me laugh, "Dummies" guide,  I wouldn't buy a book from
anyone who calls me a Dummie, may as well call it "Dummies guide to <random
task> written by muppets".
