message hooking, window subclassing, ownerdrawn menus

I am trying to create custom ownerdrawn menus with a flat border, much like
Andres Pons has done on his website:

http://www.*-*-*.com/

I am having trouble implementing his methods in vb .NET.  Can someone offer
some insight on how to do hooking and subclassing in .NET, or is there an
easier way to do this?
