Populate text boxes

 Populate text boxes

I am trying to automate running a report that pulls data
from an internet site.  I need to log in and then click a
link that downloads a file.

Is it possible to write code to populate the text boxes
and click a button.

I have tried enumerating the windows, but I can not find
the text boxes or button to click to get the handle.  Is
this possible?

Hi Thomas,
As I understand it the following is your requirement:

1. Access a website on the Internet from within an application
2. The application's webpage has some textboxes which need to be
__programatically__ populated
3. The application's webpage has a link which needs to be 'clicked'
__programatically__.

Please let me know if I understood you correctly. I need to know some
details before I suggest a solution:
1. Is this a VB EXE application?
2. What is the control being used to access the Internet?
3. Is it a link or a button which you need to click.

Regards,

Arvind.

I'm sorry, I did not answer your questions completely.

Yes, I am writing the VB exe which can either use the
control Microsoft Internet Controls (shdocvw.dll) or just
use sendmessages the Microsoft Internet.exe and I have a
link and a button to click.  I also need to populate text
boxes.

I am trying to automate running a report that pulls

click a link that downloads a file.

Is it possible to write code to populate the text boxes
and click a button.  I have tried enumerating the windows,
but I can not find the text boxes or button to click to
get the handle.

This can be inside a vb.exe using Microsoft Internet
Controls (shdocvw.dll) or just use sendmessages to the
Microsoft Internet.exe. I have a link and a button to
click.  I also need to populate text boxes.

Hi Thomas,
Its pretty difficult to write code that would populate the textboxes and
click a button but it can be done using windows apis.  A much easier way of
getting the report would be to call the link directly using Process.Start.
All you have to do is get the URL of the data to get and then figure out
what values need to be replaced with the values that go into the textboxes.
For example, if you wanted to see the moneycentral webpage for how a
particular stock was doing you could use this VB.Net code:

Dim StockSymbol As String = "MSFT"

Process.Start("http://moneycentral.msn.com/scripts/webquote.dll?iPage=lqd&Sy
mbol=" & StockSymbol)

Hope this helps,
Eric
