 Don't worry about Java...

Java isn't going to take over the world until everyone has cheap ISDN. Try
accessing sun.com from hotjava over a V.34 line... it makes those Nutscape-
crazy web pages seem lightweight.

What is the port speed that you are talking to the V.34 modem? Using
a 28.8 V.34 modem, 4x that is 115.2. Might have to buy a board that
comes with drivers but its well worth the price.

...to be fair, it's still alpha...the AWT (graphics) library is being
re-written...etc.

This is really not Java comment, but a HotJava comment. The correct
performance question to ask will be: What will a netscape with an
integral java interpretter run at? I suspect the the Java code downloads
will be much faster than some of the large JPEGS and certainly less
than MPEGS.

The Java code for an applet is typically very small.  It's all of that
content data that bogs down the link.  java.sun.com is just slow because
there are a helluva lot of hits on it and a good number of people
downloading a lot of the files.

Anyways, can we move anymore discussion about Java to email since this
really has nothing to do with Tcl/Tk anymore.

Thanks,

Until HotJava programs can be represented as a long string of a single
character, or as just a single character, I wouldn't count on 4x to be
in effect at all times.
