 tempfile.mktemp no longer obeys tempfile.tempdir?

This broke a few of my scripts:

  nu[110]junk% python
  Python 1.4b2 (Aug 12 1996) [C]
  Copyright 1991-1996 Stichting Mathematisch Centrum, Amsterdam
  >>> import tempfile
  >>> tempfile.tempdir='/junk/hooft'
  >>> tempfile.mktemp()

  >>> tempfile.tempdir
  '/usr/tmp'
  >>>
