How to cause a server-generated error page to display

I want to test whether a file exists and if it does, include it,
but if not then I would
like to tell the web server to issue the default "HTTP/1.x Error 404:
Page Not Found" document.

I've tried using header() to set the status to 404 but that doesn't
work.  Does anyone have any
suggestions?

Thanks,
Erik
