 capturing command line error or output from `<command>`

I needs to capture both error and/or output generated by a command line
using ``.

Example:

This does not capture errors.  How can I capture errors from a command
line.

I needs to capture the output in variable, so I guess I needs to capture
in file and then read from file to variable.
