 How does dbmopen() really work?

So I've been using associative arrays and dbmopen and all that for
several years, completely carefree about the actual implementation...
until now.

I'm curious... when you do a dbmopen() to bind an array to the dbm
file, is the dbm file being loaded into memory or does it remain on
disk, and the perl interpreter magically seeks and fetches data from
the file whenever you access the assoc. array?
