 segmentation faults on AIX

Hi. I'm trying to figure out just what is causing the
following. First, some good output ...

$ /usr/local/bin/perl -v

This is perl, version 5.005_02 built for aix

Copyright 1987-1998, Larry Wall

this system using `man perl' or `perldoc perl'.  If you have access to the
Internet, point your browser at http://www.*-*-*.com/ , the Perl Home Page.

Now here's the puzzle ...

$ /usr/local/bin/perl -V
Segmentation fault(coredump)

... and yet ...

$ cd /usr/local/bin
$ ./perl -V

The version of perl is old, but I can't upgrade it. Also, it was built
on a machine running AIX 4.2.1, but running under AIX 4.3.3.

I'm hoping someone else running Perl under AIX has seen something like
this - perhaps this is a shell bug, and not a perl problem? I'm using
the Korn Shell as my shell, but the same behavior happens under the C
shell (just tried it). My searching on Google didn't turn up anything
that seemed to help either, so it's to the newsgroups I go.

Any AIX/Perl experts out there with suggestions? Thanks in advance.
