partial search on a whois server

This question is posted in english for bigger audience.

When making this query ('microsoft.') with a software
like 'winwhois' on connecting to a  whois server (port 43)
like 'rs.internic.net' (not all servers accept this query)
a list of domains containing the word 'microsoft' is returned.

But when querying this late server 'rs.internic.net', through a script
(perl, php..) it complains the domain 'microsoft.' is not registred.

Does someone know HOWTO query a whois server to do a partial
('microsoft.') search trough a script?

Thanks in advance for help.
