 GD install problem on Linux

I'm a novice and got stuck when attempting to install GD.
Wondering if anyone knows how to get around it.

I'm running Redhat 2.0.32 patched to 2.0.36, gcc  Perl
and loading GD-1.18. My error occurs when I run make and the output is
as follows:

DEFINE=''; export DEFINE INC; \
cd libgd && make -e all
make[1]: Entering directory `/root/Examples/GD-1.18/libgd'
cc -c  -Dbool=char -DHAS_BOOL -O2    -DVERSION=\"0.10\"
-DXS_VERSION=\"0.10\" -fpic -I/usr/lib/perl5/i386-linux/5.00401/CORE
In file included from gd.h:15,
                 from gdfontg.h:16,
                 from gdfontg.c:13:
io.h:14: stdio.h: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [gdfontg.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/Examples/GD-1.18/libgd'
make: *** [libgd/libgd.a] Error 2

Thanks in advance..
