The "Camel Book" is, IMHO, the definitive "perl hacker's companion and
tutorial."  Your bookstore may expect you to call it:

"Programming perl" by Larry Wall and Randal Schwartz

It is published by O'Reilly & Associates, Inc.

ISBN:  0-937175-64-1

Price: $29.95 US;  A bargain, buy 2.
