 Fortran/C reading Excel (.xls) files

Does anyone have or know of a fortran or C subroutine to read and write EXCEL
files? Thanks in advance.

You can save the files as SYLK files to get a pure ascii file which
can then be decoded with a moderate amount of fuss. Definition of the
SYLK file format is available from MicroSoft. You can even save it as
comma delimited text if it is fairly tame.

If you write out a comma or tab delimited file, it will be treated as
as poorly formatted spreadsheet by most of the spreadsheet programs.
If you want to put on cell borders, and other bells, whistles or geehaws,
then it is more work.

If you only need the simple features, then it mostly a matter of
remembering that the simple things will work.
