Message passing or OpenMP ? HPF ? Even trying to use Pthreads ?
Or a mixture of the above ?

Well as a first stop the Edinburgh courses tend to be very good,
so you could try

They etnd to concentrate on fortran so they should address
some of your needs, at least some of those to do with
programming :)
