I am trying to change uppercase into lower case withj something like this:

And you want to know why it doesn't work, right?

Look in your Cobol manual for the description of the data types
of the operands of the ADD statement.

If you're using an EBCDIC computer (such as an IBM or Amdahl
mainframe), there is an additional reason this won't work. Hint:
you have assumed that the code set is ASCII -- not necessarily true.
