IBM and OO COBOL (today and future)

From the Search390 "developer's forum", Tom Ross wrote

"IBM COBOL has had Object-oriented COBOL since 1995. Is that what you mean?
Are you asking how popular it is, what the future is, or ?

There has been a preview announcement of z/OS Release 2 that says that SOM
will no longer be part of z/OS starting with Release 2. Since the OS/390 OO
COBOL implementation relied on SOM, that means we will be making some
changes to our OO COBOL support."
