You're in luck, because there are many programs available for doing this. They're even covered in the C FAQ in question 18.3. -- "Am I missing something?" --Dan Pop

That software is usually referred to as "a C compiler." Check the FAQ. Cheers, -Arthur

This software is generally called a C compiler. Many C compilers can produce assembly-language output instead of or in addition to machine-language object code, if you ask nicely. Quote: >Thank you in advance.

gcc -S program.c Other methods, other compilers, you didn't specify. Quote:

Yes. They are called compilers. Most can save an intermediary assembly source file. --

All compilers do that. If using gcc, try the option -S (to stop at the assembly stage) or -fsave-temps to leave all temp files (that is, .i, .s) where they are. - Jan Engelhardt

No, some compile direct to machine code.

What do you mean by "all compilers do that"? Have you tried every compiler there is? What if someone wants to make a compiler which doesn't do that? --

Most compilers do this internally. Look in the documentation for a way to alter the compilation stages involved. For example, in gcc you can add '-S' to the command line to do this. -- Freenet distribution (temporary): http://24.25.175.161:8891/s3Cfy0DLHwA/ The Tree of Learning bears the noblest fruit, but noble fruit tastes bad.

If they did they would never be able to debug it :)

I believe there's a C compiler that compiles to LISP code. - Kevin.

Many, probably almost all, C compilers will do this for you. Check your documentation for the right switches to use.

Yes. It's called a compiler. Some have a option to keep the intermediate assembly source on the disk.
