re. circumventing use of printf() in cp/m ...

yes ...

also in dos programming on micros ...

code overhead of printf() for formatting,  conversion and
specification of output may be intolerable if not needed ...
today ... optimizing linker of development system may trim
such code in deliverable --- but years ago ...
improvisational practice in this was compelling ...
