For recommendations in C++ books I'd ask in comp.lang.c++. For recommendations
on Windows related books I'd ask in a Windows related newsgroup such as
comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.misc.

I started off with Charles Petzold's "Programming Windows 3.1"
from Microsoft Press (there is now a Windows 95 version), and
it's generally regarded as one of the best books on the subject.

check the FAQ for more information.

That should be enough to get you started with programming in a
_proper_ windowing environment. That, of course, is what you
meant, wasn't it? There may be other ``toylike'' windowing
systems but I am unaware of such trivia.

That's what you get for asking a non-C question in comp.lang.c.
