 implementing "ls eli*"

i am trying to write a program to implement the unix command "ls eli*"
the problem is i can't find anywhere a function that can decide whether a
certain file-name-string matches a certain pattern or not.

under dos (borland) this is implemented using the findfirst function that
accepts a mask as one of it's parameters.

please reply by email...

There is no standard function to do this. Often partiular platforms
have extensions which implement the form of filename matching used on that
platform. For example Unix platforms commonly provide a glob() function.
FOr more information about Unix see comp.unix.programmer.
