Public Ada Library Activity Report for November 1993

Hello, Everyone,

The following is the activity report for the Public Ada Library (PAL)
during the month of November 1993.  This report concentrates on the
figures for WUARCHIVE and the activity associated with transfers of
files from the PAL section of WUARCHIVE.WUSTL.EDU only.

In a nutshell, the PAL activity has increased dramatically.  Over 13,000
file transfers took place in November, amounting to over 1.3 billion
bytes. Of these, over 8,000 file transfers took place in the United
States to 67 companies, 127 colleges and universities, and 17 government
organizations (counting organizations like the Army once).  Over 5,000
file transfers took place to 28 other countries.

Records on file transfers from the PAL have been kept for only three
months (October was skipped due to the loss of the file transfer logs
when the disk crashed during the upgrade to 21G bytes).  During this
time, 438 organizations in the United States have accessed the PAL,
including 138 companies and 253 colleges and universities.
Organizations in 40 other countries have also accessed the PAL.

This report is divided into two parts: (1) the figures for the PAL and
WUARCHIVE during November and (2) the figures for PAL and WUARCHIVE
during August, September, and November 1993.

The Public Ada Library supports five electronic mailing lists:
  1. PAL-ANNOUNCE for people interested in hearing about updates to the PAL
  2. ADA-TRAIN for people involved in Ada education and training
  3. REUSEWG for members of ACM/SIGAda Reuse Working Group
  4. EDUCATIONWG for members of ACM/SIGAda Education Working Group
  5. REUSE for people interested in reuse in general (not necessarily
     Ada-based)

Will some nice professional ada-ite tell me why the country has to blow
taxpayer's dollars employing over 40 people at CARDS and ASSET when we have
the great success of the pretty much unmanned PAL archive?  If Rick was to
reorganize the PAL archive to be Gopher and WAIS accessible (which it might be)
there would be absolutely no need for CARDS and ASSET - we would have global
interoperability for an Ada repository.

The economics of these reuse centers is so lousy that they would last
about ten minutes after the DoD cut off their funding.  They have been
unable to make effective use of modern technology (CDROMs, Internet tools
such as WAIS/Gopher/Mosaic), and grossly exaggerate the savings from people
using their repositories.

The silence on the waste going on at these reuse centers is just one of
the roadblocks to Ada commercialization.  Like Ralph Crafts said at the
Ada Summit, it's time to cut the funding to all of the Ada efforts like
GNAT, STARS and the reuse centers (okay Ralph could only concede on GNAT),
and make them survive on their on.

So what is it folks?  Why with PAL (or PAL with a little funding) do we
need CARDS or ASSET?

OK, Greg. I'll phrase a nice neutral question here. If anyone from ASSET
or CARDS is lurking out there, I'd appreciate their posting an activity
report like the PAL one Rick just posted. My tax dollars are paying for
these repositories. I am making no sweeping jugement as to their usefulness;
I simply do not know what their user base is, what their activity level is,
what their satisfaction level is. Will someone from these organizations
like to come forward and tell us about these places?

Someone suggested I send GW-Ada/Ed to ASSET. I received a large
packet of forms, etc., to fill in along with the submission.
Unlike the Paperwork Reduction Act disclosures on the IRS forms,
there is no estimate given on how long it will take me to fill these
forms out.

Given that GW-Ada/Ed has been copied something like 1000 times from
PAL, it's hard for me to see the virtue in filling out paperwork to
get the thing into ASSET. Can someone tell us the benefits? Please?

Thanks!
