9th ECOOP Workshop for PhD Students in Object Oriented Systems (PhDOOS '99)
***************************************************************************

Part of the 13th European Conference on Object Oriented Programming (ECOOP
'99), Lisbon, Portugal, June 14-18, 1999.

Financially Supported by AITO and Object Technology International Inc.

=============================
Call for Papers/Participation
=============================

The workshop is intended for PhD students within the area of
object-orientation.  All relevant topics are considered, including but not
restricted to:

Methods
Languages
Applications
Distribution
Databases
Patterns
Semantics
Frameworks
Metrics
Reuse
Testing
Graphics
User interfaces
Numerics

The workshop offers an opportunity for PhD students to meet and share their
research experiences, to discover commonalities in research and studentship,
and to foster a collaborative environment for joint problem-solving.  PhD
students from both industry and academia are encouraged to attend in order to
ensure a broad, unconfined discussion.

The workshop also aims at strengthening the international Network of PhD
Students in Object-Oriented Systems (PhDOOS), which was initiated at the 1st
workshop during ECOOP '91 in Geneva, Switzerland.  The PhD Network counts
approximately 125 members from all over the world, all of them PhD students.
There is a mailing list and a WWW site, used mainly for information and
discussion of OO-related topics.  For more information see
http://www.*-*-*.com/ .

Moreover, it is a tradition to strengthen the internal workshop network e.g.
by dining together after the regular programme of the day.

Funding
-------

Last year AITO contributed funding which enabled the participation of some
persons who would not afford to participate otherwise. We expect that this
arrangement will be repeated this year. Besides we have received financial
support from Object Technology International Inc. Funding information can be
found at http://www.*-*-*.com/
enquiries and applications should be submitted to Alexandru Telea

Work Practices
--------------

The workshop is divided into plenary sessions and subgroup sessions. The
subgroups will be formed before the workshop, based on the research interests
of the participants.  At the workshop, the main part of the technical
programme consists of presentations and discussions in subgroups.  Results and
summaries from the subgroup discussions will be presented at a plenary
session.  Accepted works will be made available to all participants in
advance.

The plenary session will also feature two invited speakers talking about the
PhD getting process, how to conduct research, interesting future research
hot-spots, personal experiences or similar topics. Usually this is a good
opportunity to hear things not discussed elsewhere, and to have an "unplugged"
discussion with a well-known personality of our field.

Submission Information
----------------------

To participate, you should make sure that you have an updated abstract entry
in the PhDOOS network database.  If you are not a member of the network,
please send a one-page (500 words) abstract of your research, as described
below.  If you are already a member, consider renewing the abstract.

You can apply for a short (15 minute) presentation of your research based on
the abstract alone.  You can additionally submit a (3-8 page) position paper
for review and give a longer (30 minute) presentation. The purpose of the
position paper is to give the other participants an overview of your work, but
it is probably also a good place to present some unusual and thought provoking
statements in order to ensure a lively discussion.

Abstracts and position papers should be submitted to Awais Rashid

pages at http://www.*-*-*.com/

Abstracts and some of the best papers will be included in the workshop
proceedings published as part of the ECOOP '99 Workshop Reade

Important Dates
---------------
April 15, 1999: Deadline for submission of abstracts and position papers
May 1, 1999: Notification of acceptance, abstracts and position papers made
available, formation of working groups starts
June 14-15: Workshop
