 Lighting in Vrml Worlds

Hi,

Does any one know a way of producing a beam of light in vrml, (using cosmo
worlds).  I want to produce an animated spotlight effect, but the radius,
beam size etc does not seem to work properly in vrml worlds.  I have had
quite a bit of trouble with lighting in the past, i.e. because the radius
field for all types of  light does not work correctly, and this may be
linked with that (I am running cosmo worlds 2 and cosmo player 2).  The
effect I am trying to achieve is a disco light effect, or a James Bond spot
light effect.

Hi Chris !

Well...I just built one a few days ago for my current project...
I used CosmoWorlds2 and experienced some problems too !
To "see" an spotlight effect I first tried to reduce the beamWidth and
cutOfAngle but it showed that it did not produce a small spot on a simple
big cube in front of it. It did nothing at all.
Using the default values seems to yield better results, and it works better
for round than for flat surfaces, i.e. a sphere will be correctly lighted
AND you will _see_ it.
I think this has to do with the normals...a side of teh cube can have only
one surface normal, which is used to calculate lighting.
The browser can't just "produce" some spot on the surface; "interpolating"
this would be far too complex, I think...
It just looks at which angle all the normals in it's beamWidth field aligned
taking zero angle from the direction field and puts decreasing intensity of
light onto surfaces with normals with higher angles.
This would explain why a sphere produces even kind of a spot with small
beamWidth values and a Cube isn't lit at all even for big values.

If there is a true lighting expert out there (because I'm not...) perhaps he
could elaborate more on this...
One last tip i can give to you : If you ever run into problems with your
world concerning unacceptably small framerates, chances are it will be
faster without spotLight.
SpotLight and Pointlight are very expensive for the browser to calculate, so
consider switching ove to one or more directionalLights.
They will do the job in most cases and a cheaper.
You can still have some "spotlight" effect" if you model your light beamer
(say a cylinder with one side open and a glowing sphere in it) and then put
a big cone in front of it that has the color of the spotlight and
transparency set to 0.8 or 0.9.
If you manage to get the bottom of the cone to be completely under the
ground plane it looks quite good.
Perhaps add some red-blue fog into the room - voila ! the dancefloor starts
to groove !
(At least it did for me...but I'm a goa freak anyway ;-)

 Lighting in Vrml Worlds
Although others have answered the question already, the main reason it doesn't
work too on a simple object is that VRML simulates light by altering vertex
color in realtime to fake a shiny or lit surface.  A very simple cube will only
have it's sides look bright uniformly, as the browser just does not have enough
vertices to work with... but if you subdivide it a couple times, you'll get
closer to the effect you're looking for. :)

of the CosmoWorld builder available?.

In fact where can the original CosmoWorlds be purchased
since all of  the the site shut downs and company buyouts?.
