 Unix overheads

Hi all
I'm looking for a solution (or something to develop one in) to convert
'stuff' on the fly which will end up on various unix and nt platforms. Our
customers will indirectly be calling this solution numerous times an hour.
Options include java, perl and scheme. Does scheme constitiue much in the
way of overheads compared to these other languages?
Thanks
Glenn
