Rony,

Can you enlighten me to as what Object REXX is? I've seen someting about it
on an IBM web page, but all that was available there was a Win95(?) release
for Object REXX. Sheesh, talk about standing behind their own products!

Can I get a beta of Object REXX? Will it be available to all OS/2 users,
or will I have to upgrade from Warp to v4.0? Will it be free or what?

Thanks,

Darryl,

Object Rexx has been available in beta-form on the DevCon-CDs ("Developer
Connection", quarterly set of CD-ROMs, annual subscription fee appr.  USD 200)
for almost two years.

It became (quietly) available for OS/2 Warp together with the OpenDoc runtime
for OS/2 at the beginning of this year.  Later on (around May) beta versions for
Win95/NT became available for free download.

Object Rexx has become available on a wide scale with Merlin.  By default Merlin
installs the classic Rexx interpreter from which you can switch to Object Rexx
by issuing SWITCHRX (and go back to the classic interpreter).  The reasoning
given, as posted on this group, was that there were some pre-tokenized classic
Rexx programs found for which no source was available.  As Object Rexx uses an
entirely different tokenizing image those old pre-tokenized Rexx programs won't
run (unless, the source of those classic pre-tokenized Rexx programs became
available).

As to whether IBM intends to give the Warp users a free downloadable version of
Object Rexx (as shipped with Merlin), I don't know, you would have to ask IBM
managers responsible for the product.  (For the cause of Object Rexx this would
be an important action to be undertaken, IMHO.)

Hope that helps a little.

Regards,

---rony

It's REXX with Smalltalk-like extentions.  The major difference with old
REXX is that it parses the entier source at once, and thus breaks
existing programs with bugs in dead code sections.

The beta shipped for some time now on Developers Connection CDs.  Even
if you haven't a subscription, you could have got it with the OpenDoc
toolkit last spring, either by downloading it from the web, or by
letting IBM mail you the DevCon9 Special Edition CDs for free.  Sheesh,
talk about standing behind their own products!

Team clueless again?  Don't you guys have web browsers?  Just once, try
to use a search engine before posting rubbish...

Fine, but all these are betas. I have all those CD's. The question is:
is the FINAL Object-Rexx, as shipped with Merlin, also available
for OS/2 Warp 3.0?
Your post doesn't answer this question, nor does the IBM Object Rexx
home page. That promenently advertises Windows Object-Rexx, and is
not at all helpful about finding out the status of the OS/2 version.
It's probably downloadable somewhere, but is is more work to find it.
