I would just draw the line segment with square ends and then go to each
endpoint and draw small circles of the proper radius.

Different line ends/segment ends on dashed line?
Many thanks to everyone who responded to my question (and I got LOTS of
responses - basically too many to reply to individually!).
There was pretty much a consensus that the best way to do it is to draw the
dashed line with square (butt) ends, then draw small circles of the
correct radius at each end.
