HP Deskjet 1600CM gives timeout ERROR [long]

Hi,

Just this morning I received a postscript SIMM for my HP Deskjet 1600C.

If I do a "copy /b tiger.ps lpt1", then the tiger prints fine on the first page,
but on a second page the folowing messages are printed:

-- start quote --

ERROR: timeout
OFFENDING COMMAND: timeout

STACK:

-- end quote --

What am I doing wrong ?

I also installed the AdobePS (version 5.2 for Windows NT) driver and used the
"HP Deskjet 1200C/PS" PPD (provided at the adobe.com site) and If I open
tiger.ps in GSview 3.6 (and Gscript 6.50) and select 'print | PostScript
printer' and select the "deskjet 1200C/PS" I still get the same two-page output.

If I print the tiger.ps file to my HP LaserJet 4+ (with PostScript SIMM
installed) the output (altough in B&W) is correct (= 1 page).

Anybody !?

BTW 0:
I see one difference between the deskjet and laserjet output (besides color vs.
B&W): the bottom 'margin' on the laserjet's output is smaller (about 5 mm) while
the deskjet's output has a bigger bottom 'margin' (  about 23 mm; both on A4
paper)

BTW 1:
If I print a document containing text-only from Word (97) to the Deskjet 1200C
driver then everything is OK.

BTW 2:
The PostScript configuration (test-)page lists:
 Password: 0
 Print Errors: true (on)
 Left Margin: 0
 Top Margin: 0
 Page Count: 2953
 PostScript Available Memory: 8.5 MegaBytes
Global Virtual Memory: 4184836 (maximum available)
Local Virtual Memory: 3186176 (maximum available)
Maximum Size of Font Cache: 891289
Current Size of Font Cache: 294596
 Printer Name: Deskjet 1600CM
 Product Name: Deskjet 1600CM
 PostScript Code version: 2014.108
 Device Specific Revision: 1
and:
Job Timeout: 0 (no time limit)
 Manual Feed Timeout: 60 (seconds)
 Wait Timeout: 40 (seconds)

BTW 3:
The 1600CM Selftest page prints OK and 'sees' the PostScript Card and a total
RAM size of 10 MegaBytes. It reports
 Errors: None
 PageProtection: Off
 I/O Timeout: 15 seconds

BTW 4:
The HP deskjet 1200C/PS driver has the following timeouts:
 Job TimeOut: 0 seconds
 Wait Timeout: 300 seconds

I increased the 15 second timeout (printed on the selftest page) to 120 seconds:
still the 2nd page lists the timeout errors, but the bottom 'margin' is now 5 mm
too (like the printout from the laserjet).

The PostScript protocol used by this printer expects jobs to be
terminated. If the job is not terminated, it sits waiting for more
data, and will eventually fail, unless you set the timeout to be
unlimited.

Better is to include an end-of-job marker. This is not PostScript, but
is a control character intercepted by the printer. The character you
need is a single Ctrl+D (ASCII 004) character. Be sure it is the very
last data sent, not followed by a new line (since the new line would
commence another job).

Aandi,

THANKS! In GSview I choose File | Print | PS printer | Settings and selected
"Send CRTL+D after job" and all is well.

When I first read your reply, I didn't think it was the cause of the problem,
because the Deskjet 1200C/PS driver settings list something like "Send CTRL-D
After Each Job = YES", but things are not the way I thought them to be...

Thanks (again IIRC !),

BTW:
do you know, or have an URL, how I can calibrate my
scanner/monitor/color-printer?
