: And it's not a good book for learning PostScript programming.
: It's a reference manual, not a textbook.
Hello, there, and while agreeing that indeed the "Red Book" (1985, 1990,
or forthcoming edition with PostScript Level 3) is not a textbook or
tutorial, I would add that it is an excellent supplement to such books,
and has some very interesting things to say about the nature of the
language and imaging model as well as providing the invaluable references
on operators and errors, etc.
What I might recommend doing is to start out with a good tutorial or two,
but also have the "Red Book" on hand from the beginning, and just browse
through it out of curiosity, not worrying if you start out not
understanding very much. As the language becomes more familiar, this
reference book may reveal some rewarding insights about the language, as
well as answering immediate questions such as "What does this errortype
mean?"
Most respectfully,
Margo Schulter
