Converting PDF to PS Level 1 - how to invoke gs?

I'm using ghostscript-5.50;  not knowing what I'm doing, I've tried various
incantations involving "-c 1 .setlanguagelevel"  and " -c .languagelevel 1 def"
with no luck.  I just want to print PDF files using gv-3.5.8 (but I have old
LaserWriters).

The ghostscript distribution contains the script `pdf2ps'

Try:

pdf2ps -dPSLevel1 myfile.pdf myfile.ps

Then you can print myfile.ps with your old printer...
