EXPERT SYSTEMS '93: FURTHER INFORMATION AND BOOKING FORM
--------------------------------------------------------
Expert Systems '93 is the thir{*filter*}th annual conference of the
British Computer Society Specialist Group on Expert Systems. It
will be held from 13th to 15th December 1993 at St. John's
College, Cambridge, UK.
Organised and Sponsored by BHR Group Limited. Co-sponsored by the
Institution of Electrical Engineers.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The Conference is aimed at those who wish to update themselves
with news and views of recent developments, understand how other
groups are applying the technology and exchange ideas with leading
international experts in the field. Our goal, as always, is for
ES93 to be a meeting place for the European knowledge-based
systems community. The multi-track Conference, the Tutorials and
the Exhibition are designed to provide a wide range of options for
delegates, whether they are newcomers to the technology or
seasoned practitioners. The social programme provides an
opportunity to relax, meet old friends and make new contacts.
TWO-DAY CONFERENCE
Refereed Papers
---------------
ES93 has two parallel refereed tracks. These are the Technical
Track extending over the two days of the Conference and the
smaller Poplog Environment Applications Track on the second day
only. The Technical Track includes 21 refereed papers. The
technical areas range from Model Based Reasoning to Rule Induction
and include papers on such important issues as Verification/
Validation and Knowledge Engineering Methodology. The Poplog
Environment Applications Track collects together papers that use
one of the Pop family of languages or the Poplog environment.
There are papers on Visual Programming, Hypermedia and Object
Oriented Programming and others which deal with traditional AI
topics such as Language Understanding and Vision.
Applications Track
------------------
The papers in the Applications Track have been chosen to reflect
practical issues of applying knowledge-based system technology to
real world problems. Sample applications areas include Scheduling,
Condition Monitoring and Design. The applications cover a variety
of industry sectors ranging from aerospace through manufacturing
to finance.
TUTORIALS
This year ES93 is supported by three independent Tutorials:
Design and Development of Knowledge-Based Systems
John Kingston, AIAI, University of Edinburgh, UK
An Introduction to Constraint Handling
James Little, AI International Limited, UK
Case-Based Reasoning
Dr Robert Milne, Intelligent Applications Limited, UK
The presenters are all technical authorities in their own right.
Delegates will find these Tutorials to be especially valuable
where there is a current need to consider the introduction of
these technologies into their own organisations.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Keynote Speakers
----------------
Opening Keynote Presentation: 'A Business Plan for Knowledge-
Inclusive Systems'. Dr Chas Church, Hitachi Europe Ltd, UK.
Closing Keynote Presentation: 'Knowledge Science; a pragmatic
approach to research in Expert Systems': Professor T.R.Addis,
University of Reading, UK
The HEFCs' Knowledge-Based Systems Initiative
---------------------------------------------
This Track includes a selection of reports and poster-papers on
KBS applications development projects sponsored by the Higher
Education Funding Councils' Joint Information Systems Committee
(HEFCs' JISC) under its Knowledge-Based Systems Initiative.
The Great Debate
----------------
'Developers trained in conventional IT are incapable of adapting
to KBS'.
Many industrial companies are disillusioned with leaving KBS up to
individual engineers, external consultants or AI suppliers. But
at the same time, as companies look to computerise the heart of
their business - their industrial processes, rather than
administration and finance - the limitations of conventional IT
become ever more obvious. Should we support the absorption of KBS
development into IT - or stage a take-over bid for the future of
computer systems development? Supporting the absorption of KBS
into general systems development will be a software manager in a
major industrial organisation and a consultant from a large
software house; arguing against them will be two successful KBS
developers.
Awards for the Best Submitted Papers and Best Presentation
----------------------------------------------------------
Hewlett-Packard Laboratories and ILOG Limited are jointly
sponsoring the best submitted technical papers and best
presentation awards. Extended presentations of the prize winning
papers will be given on Wednesday 15 December 1993.
THE EXHIBITION
ES93 is supported by a small exhibition in which leading
'intelligent systems' suppliers will be providing practical
demonstrations of their products and services. Included in this
Exhibition are demonstrations of authors' software from the Poplog
Environment Applications track. The Exhibition package includes a
display space (approx. 2m x 2m) with table, chairs and power
points; lunches and refreshments daily; full address list of all
delegates; a reduced attendance fee at the tutorials or technical
sessions. Price: SGES Member 550.00 pounds. Non-Member 650.00
pounds.
WELCOME RECEPTION AND GALA DINNER
Delegates are invited to attend a Welcome Reception on the evening
of Monday 13 December 1993. The Reception will be held in the
Exhibition Lounge and will be an ideal opportunity to meet up with
old friends and colleagues and make new ones. The Gala Dinner will
be held on the evening of Tuesday 14 December 1993 and will take
place within the 16th Century Dining Hall at St. John's College.
This year's after dinner speaker will be Alan Montgomery, Managing
Director, ISL (Integral Solutions Limited).
