 tk8.4a3 porting update

Just to let you know the porting process for tk8.4a3 has just reached point
where all the C code compiles and links. Now to get it to load ...

 tk8.4a3 porting update

Will the version be "Darwin" compatible? I have heard a number of
conflicting reports about perl/tk.

1) It will compile and link if you use a specially patched loader.
2) The resulting version is fubared, hovering mouse over ui elements
   causes a crash.

Does anyone *actually* have a working version of Perl/Tk for
MacOS X 10.1.3...

If perl5.7.3+ runs on Darwin (I believe it does), and Tcl/Tk8.4 runs
on Darwin (does it?) then we should be able to make Tk804.0XX run there
too.

But will need someone with such a machine to alpha-test it

Is "Darwin" the same as "MacOS X 10.1.3..." ?

Tk.so now loads (SuSE 6.4, bleadperl) and shows a Button.
Most anything else still core dumps (which is normal for this
stage of a port...)

Yup, it runs.

Essentially, Mac OS X is the slick Aqua interface to Darwin.

I have a G3 Mac Powerbook running MacOSX10.1.3.  Perl5.6 is working and
pTk 800.23 is working under X-windows.  I also have Tcl/Tk running under
the Aqua interface (not in X-windows).  I'd like to see pTk working under
Aqua but don't know how to try it.  I've installed pTk 800.23 using CPAN
for the X-windows implementation and the Tcl/Tk running under Aqua is Tcl
and Tk 8.4a4 from Ingram and Johnson Scriptics.Inc.  I needed to turn off
cc optimization in order to get 800.23 to stop crashing. in X-windows.  If
it's possible for me to edit a few files and get pTk to run natively under
Aqua I'm willing to test things out.

pTk 800.23 runs with perl 5.6 under X-windows on MacOSX10.1.3. on my G3
powerbook.  One must replace dyld with a new version that ignores
multiple definitions (I recall) and one must also compile pTK with no
optimization.  Everything seems to work then.  However this runs only
under X-windows and not natively under Aqua.  It would be nice since Tcl
now has a native Aqua version if pTk also had one.  I'm willing to test
some code but would have to be walked through on how to modify it to run
on OSX.

it's possible for me to edit a few files and get pTk to run natively under

Aqua I'm willing to test things out.  I know that Tk8.4a4 resides in
System/Library/Frameworks/Tkframework on the Mac and that that runs with
the Tcl framework in the same location.  If there is a simple way to tell
perl 5.6 to use the Tkframework I'm willing to give it a shot.  But I'm
rather a novice at all this.

It's not.  When Tk804.xxx is production, I plan on merging the Aqua mods ...

Tk804.??? to be + bleadperl can now (on SuSE 6.4 + some extra fonts):
 A. Pass all its test suite.
 B. Display perl's Japanese and Korean encoding test data in a Text widget

My semi-instrumented malloc/free is showing leaks, but not where they
come from yet (though they do seem to be multi-font related...)

I think I am going to see what happens if I try tkmail with it ...
