Is it possible to send a command to a program that's already running and
have it 'exit'?

 Command line help.
There are probably a ton of ways, none perfect.  I think the perl IPC docs
would be good to start with...

You could create a file the other process occasionally checks for....if not
on W32 you could use
signals.  And some type of network (socket) communication would also work...

Or just call kill() on it...not the cleanest exit though...
